Copying email automation templates

Last updated August 5, 2026

Objective

If you need to completely duplicate or export an email design, the standard editor interface may not always let you clone layouts across different messaging tools. This guide explains how to copy an existing email template or automated message by exporting and importing its raw structural code.

Key Steps

Step 1: Export the Existing Code

  • Open the specific email template or automated message you want to replicate.

  • Look closely at the top navigation bar inside the editor and locate the Code View icon (represented by two arrows with a slash in the middle: </>).

  • Click this icon to open a window displaying the email's raw HTML structure.

  • Click inside the box, select everything, and press Cmd + C (Mac) or Ctrl + C (Windows) to copy the entire block of code.

Step 2: Create a Fresh Message

  • Exit the code window and navigate back to your dashboard.

  • Click the New Message button in the upper right-hand corner.

  • Give your new email an internal template name and a subject line.

Step 3: Import the Code to Duplicate

  • Scroll down to the blank editor canvas and locate the top navigation bar again.

  • Find and click the Import icon (represented by an arrow pointing down with a line under it).

  • Click into the blank text window, press Cmd + V (Mac) or Ctrl + V (Windows) to paste your copied code block.

  • Click the Import button in the bottom left-hand corner of the pop-up. The entire design, layout, and image structure will instantly duplicate onto your new canvas.

Cautionary Notes

  • Complete Overwrite: Importing code onto a template canvas will completely overwrite any existing elements or text you have already typed on that page. Always perform imports on a completely blank, new template.

  • Intact Link Blocks: While formatting, text, and structure copy perfectly, remember to click into any embedded Link Blocks or images to update their href web links if the new email is supposed to point to a different destination.

Tips for Efficiency

  • AI Formatting: This code window is fully compatible with generative AI tools. You can copy your raw Recur email code, paste it into an AI prompt, and instruct it to edit specific text portions or change structural column formats while leaving the underlying design wrapper intact.

  • Cross-Account Sharing: Because this process handles pure layout code, you can paste this snippet into a text file to share exact email designs with chapter leads, sister associations, or backup accounts using Recur.
