Creating groups

Last updated August 5, 2026

Objective

This guide outlines two primary methods for creating and managing groups within Recur. Groups are essential for segmenting your database, allowing you to target specific members for specialized communication, event invites, or automated sequences.

Method 1: The Groups Dashboard

This is the most efficient way to create a group structure from scratch and add multiple members at once.

  • Navigate: Go to the Groups tab in the main navigation.

  • Initiate: Click the New Group button.

  • Name Your Group: Enter a descriptive name (e.g., "Board Members" or "Volunteers").

  • Add Members: * You can save the group and add members later, or add them immediately.

    • Double-click a contact name in the list to move them into the group.

    • Alternatively, select a contact and use the Arrow button to move them over.

  • Save: Click Save to finalize the group.

Method 2: Creating Groups via a Contact Profile

This method is ideal if you are already working within a specific member’s record and realize they need a new category.

  • Navigate: Go to Contacts > People and click on a specific contact.

  • Locate Group Box: Find the Groups box at the top of the contact’s profile screen.

  • Add Existing: Search for and select an existing group to add the member.

  • Create New: If the group you need does not exist, type the new group name into the search box.

    • Click the Create Group option that appears in the dropdown.

    • The new group is created instantly and is now available for all other contacts in your system.

Managing Group Membership

  • Removing Members: To remove a contact from a group, click the "X" next to the group name in their contact profile.

  • Bulk Updates: Use the Groups dashboard to see a list of everyone in a specific group and manage them in a single view.

Cautionary Notes

  • Duplicate Groups: Before using Method 2 to "Create Group," double-check that a similar group doesn't already exist to avoid cluttering your database (e.g., "Board" vs. "Board Members").

  • Save Reminders: Always ensure you click Save after adding or removing groups in a contact profile to commit those changes.

Tips for Efficiency

  • Targeted Engagement: Once groups are created, you can use them as filters in the Automated Messages section to send tailored emails only to specific segments (like "Sponsors").

  • On-the-Fly Organization: Method 2 is a powerful tool for cleaning up your database; as you notice commonalities between members while reviewing profiles, you can categorize them instantly.
