Last updated August 5, 2026

Objective

This guide explains how to add a processing fee to membership payments in Recur to help offset payment processing costs from Stripe.

Key Steps

Step 1: Navigate to Payment Settings

  • Click the Settings (gear icon) in the top right corner of the screen.

  • Scroll down and select Payments.

Step 2: Understand Stripe Processing Fees

  • Payments processed through Stripe typically include a fee of:

    • 2.9% of the transaction

    • Plus $0.30 per transaction

  • Example:

    • If someone pays $100, Stripe will take about $3 in processing fees.

Step 3: Add a Processing Fee

  • In the Payments settings, locate the processing fee option.

  • Enter the processing fee you want to charge.

Step 4: Choose the Fee Type

  • You can set the fee in one of two ways:

    • Percentage Fee (example: 3.5%)

    • Flat Dollar Amount (example: $3.00)

Step 5: Save Your Settings

  • Once you enter the desired fee, save the changes.

  • The fee will be applied to future transactions to help offset Stripe processing costs.

Cautionary Notes

  • Processing fees are optional and can be adjusted based on your organization’s preference.

  • Make sure members are aware of any added fees during checkout.

Tips for Efficiency

  • Use a percentage fee if your membership prices vary.

  • Use a flat fee if most payments are the same amount.

  • Periodically review Stripe’s processing rates to ensure your fee still offsets costs accurately.
